NFL fans cite frustration with fragmented streaming rights and rising costs

Football fans in Nashville and New York City voiced complaints to OutKick reporter Davey Hudson about the challenges of accessing NFL games amid the league's expanding media deals with streaming services.

The NFL distributes regular-season games across broadcast networks and streaming platforms, requiring multiple subscriptions for full access. Amazon Prime Video holds exclusive rights to Thursday Night Football through the 2033 season.[1] YouTube TV offers NFL Sunday Ticket for out-of-market Sunday afternoon games, priced at $349 for direct purchase during the 2024 season.[2]

Recent agreements include Netflix securing exclusive rights to two Christmas Day games in 2024, marking the streamer's entry into live NFL broadcasts.[3] NBCUniversal's Peacock streamed an exclusive Wild Card playoff game for the third consecutive year in January 2024.[4]

Fans interviewed said they subscribe to at least three or four services, with some requiring five or six. One New York Jets season ticket holder with NFL Sunday Ticket noted missing certain games despite the package, as local and primetime broadcasts require additional channels.[5]

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has raised concerns about rising streaming costs for sports, aligning with fan sentiments on the fragmentation of NFL rights.

Comprehensive access often combines streaming fees with cable or satellite packages for local CBS and Fox games, NBC Sunday Night Football, and ESPN's Monday Night Football.
