Fans boo Healey, Wu at Red Sox home opener

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu drew boos from more than 36,000 fans at Fenway Park during the Boston Red Sox home opener Friday. The Democratic politicians appeared on the field for a pregame ceremony before the Red Sox faced the San Diego Padres. Footage of the jeers quickly spread on social media.

Healey and Wu have faced criticism over their stances on immigration enforcement. Healey demanded Thursday that two private airlines halt flights for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deport detained immigrants, following an ICE-related shooting in Minneapolis. In February, Wu described federal immigration operations in Boston as unconstitutional and directed the release of related surveillance and body camera footage.

Massachusetts Republican gubernatorial candidates highlighted the incident online. Brian Shortsleeve posted a video from Fenway noting the loud boos amid a close game. Mike Minogue shared similar footage with a comment on fans seeking a change, while Mike Kennealy expressed support for Red Sox Nation.

The Red Sox hosted their traditional home opener at Fenway Park, the oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball.
