Dominic Smith hits walk-off grand slam in Atlanta Braves debut following mother's death
Dominic Smith, a 30-year-old first baseman and outfielder, made his Atlanta Braves debut on March 28, 2026, against the Kansas City Royals at Truist Park in Atlanta. In the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded, Smith hit a grand slam for a 6-2 walk-off victory.[1][2]
Smith was playing shortly after the death of his mother, Yvette LaFleuer, from cancer earlier in March 2026. She had been diagnosed in September 2025 and experienced a health scare at the start of spring training. Smith left the team for more than a week to be with her before returning to compete for a roster spot.
"When I stepped up to the plate... I could feel her presence with me," Smith said. He added that his Braves teammates provided strong support during his mother's illness, prioritizing his well-being over baseball.[1]
"It’s just amazing," Smith told reporters after the game.
"Played against the Braves for a long time, and being on the other side a lot of these endings kind of hurt, so to be on the right side of it this time was so fun."[1]
The grand slam marked Smith's sixth MLB team in four years, following stints with the New York Mets (2017-2022), Washington Nationals (2023), Boston Red Sox (2024), Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants.[2] In 2025, he hit five home runs with 33 RBI in 63 games for the Giants.[1]
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Smith's feat made him the first player in MLB history to hit a walk-off grand slam in his debut with a new team.[1]
Truist Park, home of the Braves since 2017, hosted the game as part of the early 2026 MLB regular season schedule.[3]
