NFL and referees' association continue contract talks amid replacement official preparations

The National Football League (NFL) and the NFL Referees Association (NFLRA), which represents 121 game officials, remain in negotiations over a new collective bargaining agreement set to expire on May 31, 2026.[1][2]

Pro Football Talk first reported that the league could resort to replacement referees if talks stall into the season, a repeat of the 2012 labor dispute.[1] ESPN reviewed internal emails indicating the NFL has begun preparations for potential replacement officials ahead of the 2026 campaign.[3]

ESPN college football analyst Pat McAfee, a former Indianapolis Colts punter, criticized the prospect on X, stating, "Nope we can’t be doing replacement high school refs in the nfl again."[4] He called for greater accountability among officials while adapting to technology for the game's benefit.

In 2012, the NFL used replacement officials for the first three weeks of the regular season during a lockout, sourced mainly from Division III colleges and developmental leagues.[1][5] The period ended with controversy, including the September 24 "Fail Mary" play in a Seattle Seahawks-Green Bay Packers game, ruled a touchdown for Seattle on a disputed simultaneous catch.[5][6]

The NFL has sought improvements in officiating performance and accountability in recent talks.[1] The NFLRA has pushed back on some proposed changes, according to reports.[1]
